Like most 80’s baby girls, Patrick Swayze was one of my first crushes. I even loved his role as a Drag Queen in the 1995 film “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar”. If you haven’t seen this film in a while you should and its on Netflix. Besides the awesome story line, hilarious cast and amazing celebrity drops (Ru Paul, Lady Bunny, Robin Williams, Naomi Campbell to name a few) the set styling is SO GOOD! Check out some of my mood boards and favorite details from the flick.

One thing I love and admire about gay men is their ability to make something interesting and great out of rags and a thrift store. In the movie the trio of Vida Boheme, Noxeema Jackson, and Chi Chi Rodriguez get stranded in the small town of Snydersville. The home is unbelievably country and rundown so they have a makeover party. By emptying their suitcases and throwing around things like a Kimono, scarves and fans they were able to make the space fabulous.

I also really love Vida’s idol Julie Newmar. I am not expert on the actress but I will say I loved her as Catwoman in the 1966 Batman series. She has a sass about her and she also really reminds me of my idol Dita Von Tesse. TALK ABOUT amazing style, fashion, sexual appeal… Dita is the definition of burleschi and has a way of mesmerizing people into her spell. I will have a later post all about Dita, but if you do a quick google you will see my comparison to the film and Julie Newmar. In general though the movie “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar” has a sense of style that seeds off of 60s and 70s burlesque.
